Surgery and Recovery

The surgical removal of enlarged haemorrhoidal tissue is performed under the suitable type of anaesthesia. Because only three haemorrhoids can be removed during one surgery, the surgeon decides which ones to remove based on the advanced state of the haemorrhoids. The abnormal tissue is removed with an electric tool. Once the haemorrhoids have been removed, the operated area is thoroughly examined. The surgeon applies anaesthetic cream on the wounds and inserts Vaseline gauze into the anal canal. Finally, a cold compress is put over the anal region. The patient is woken up in the operating room and transferred to a recovery room.

You will need to stay in the hospital over the night. If necessary, you will be given pain medication – most patients experience considerable post-operative pain. Before checking out, you will be examined by the surgeon again. You will receive oral and written instructions on aftercare and home pain therapy. Please arrange to have someone drive you home or accompany you after checking out. Most patients return a week later for a post-surgery check-up.
