Lumbar Spine Surgery

The currently most widely used surgical method for treating lumbar hernia is microdiscectomy. It is a minimally invasive surgery that allows for a more efficacious hernia repair than conventional types of surgery. It is always performed under general anaesthesia.

Microdiscectomy starts by making a small 3 cm (1 in.) long incision in the spine area. By way of a radiological needle or by touch, the right place for the procedure is determined. A surgical microscope provides clear view and magnification during the surgery, thus enabling the surgeon to approach the nerve structures more safely, accurately and gently. If necessary, a tube is inserted under the skin to prevent blood flow into the wound. The tube is removed on the first post-operative day.

After the procedure has been completed, you will be transferred to a recovery room, where you will be further monitored. Pain medication is administered according to the pain level. The first three hours following the surgery, the patient must remain lying on the back. Later, turning to the side is allowed. Six hours after the surgery, the patient may sit up in the bed and after eight hours, also stand up and make a few steps with the assistance of medical staff. The next day, after a follow-up appointment with the doctor, you will be able to go home. Please arrange to have someone drive you home or accompany you.
